The story describes the journey of Sanzo (Xuanzang) and his three companions to the West in order to prevent the resurrection of the most powerful yokai, Gyumao, whose existence would make peace between humans and yokai impossible. Although they are half-yokai themselves, which causes people to shun and hate them, they help humans in their fight against monsters during their travels, all the while exchanging numerous jokes and witty remarks.
