Каллен's mother is of Japanese origin and works as a maid in Calelln's father's household, which allows her to be close to her daughter. Calelln initially feels disgust towards her mother, attributing her choice to remain in the house not to maternal love, but to weakness of character and lack of willpower. The mother has become addicted to a drug called "Refrain," which allows her to revisit memories of pre-war Japan. Over time, Calelln comes to understand her mother's feelings and begins to see her tragic fate as another reason to fight against British tyranny.
