A resident of Twinleaf Town in the Sinnoh region, the daughter of Shiro, the regional Pokémon champion. However, she felt that she could not meet her mother's expectations. Due to this, she decided to start her journey in the Kanto region after receiving her starter Pokémon, Piplup. Makoto was first spotted at the Pokémon Center, where her Piplup was being healed. After receiving him from Nurse Joy, she noticed a wanted poster for Team "R". Later, she ran out after hearing that Entei had been sighted nearby. Makoto traveled with Satoshi and Sōji to Mount Tensei, where Ho-oh lives. After the journey to the mountain, where Satoshi was able to battle Ho-oh, Makoto returned to Twinleaf Town.
