The story takes place in the principality of Soville, hidden in the center of an alternative 1920s Europe, where a calm has settled after World War I. The common people earn their bread, the elite seek entertainment, and the offspring of noble families are educated at the renowned St. Margaret's Academy. It is to this school that Kazuya Kujo, the younger son of a military family, is transferred from allied Japan. The local students, inclined towards mysticism and superstition, immediately give the dark-eyed newcomer the nickname "angel of death" and treat him as an outcast. Trying to dispel his melancholy, Kazuya unexpectedly meets a charming girl in a "gothic lolita" costume in the vast tower of the school library. Surprisingly, the new acquaintance, Victorica de Broglie, the illegitimate daughter of a local aristocrat, has been waiting for him for a long time. Effectively imprisoned in the academy as in a golden cage, her sharp mind found solace in the visits of her half-brother Grevil de Blois, who, out of boredom, joined the police force and became renowned as a genius, with Victorica's help. But with Kazuya's arrival, the circumstances have changed. Victorica has tasted freedom and the joy of personally unraveling criminal puzzles. Now, any tricks of lone individuals and secret societies, no matter what guise they may take on, are powerless against the new great detective and her faithful companion.
